The Callais Collection
Callaïs is the generic name for ancient green-blue precious stones used for making pendants and beads by western European cultures of the later Neolithic and early Bronze Age. The term includes turquoise and variscite but not jade. "Callaïs" was described by Pliny the Elder as being paler than lapis lazuli.
“When I retired from a thirty year as a financial advisor in 2011 I reawakened an interest in turquoise. I began collecting and learned how to cut turquoise.
As I asked questions about the history of the different turquoise, I met Philip Chambless in 2015 and we worked together on Turquoise in America Part One, The Great American Turquoise Rush 1890-1910. Part Two was published in the 1st Edition hardcover in 2020. In 2023 I completed the trilogy of Turquoise in America with the publication of Part Three, The Stories of Turquoise 1990-2020.
I have decided to begin offering select cabs from the Callais Collection for sale on the web site. I have tried to focus the collection on the highest grades from the most well-known mines. These selections provide the opportunity to own turquoise from one of the most respected collections of turquoise. The grades are made by myself using the R2 method for determining the turquoise grade, TG.”
